Sen no Rikyu

1522-1591. Tea practitioner. The founder of the three Sen schools of the Way of Tea (Sado). His name as a child was Yoshiro, and his Buddhist name was Soeki. He was born in Sakai, the son of Tanaka Yohei. He learned chanoyu from Takeno Joo and worked as tea master for Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He showed an originality which had not been seen in chanoyu before that time and perfected wabi-cha (tea of quiet taste).
