This was the chanoyu aesthetic at the beginning of the Edo period, formed during the Kan'ei period (1624 - 44). Sen no Rikyu's wabi (quiet simplicity) was its basis, but it valued symmetry and refinement more, with an element of Heian period culture being its special characteristic.
