Shindenzukuri

Aristocrats of the Heian period constructed houses. With Tainoya rooms connected by Watadono corridors to the central living area Shinden. Tainoya rooms were built to the left, the right and the back to the Sinden room. The inside of the house had wooden floors, and the rooms had keshoyaneura (a sloping ceiling which is the underside of the roof). The large rooms were divided by okijo (using the tatami mats, put on the floors), byobu (folding screens) and kicho (screens) for everyday life.
