Kobori Enshu 1579-1647. A daimyo who was also a tea practitioner of the early Edo period. He learned tea from Furuta Oribe and worked as tea master for the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu. His aesthetic was called 'kireisabi' (a combination of decorative beauty and simplicity), and he created a chanoyu that was suitable for samurai. He also excelled in architecture and garden design and was a representative man of culture of the Kan'ei period. |
